Imagine that it’s cold and wet outside, and you just want to sit with a blankey watching TV in front of the heater, and your dog is looking at you with those big eyes and waggly tail, asking for a walk, you get the guilts and throw the blanket aside because…. They have you wrapped around their little (or big) paws.

The other time you might be woken with your puss standing on your chest asking to be fed, and although you would rather stay in bed, you know they won’t let you relax until they get their breakfast.

Then, Millie, the turtle, scoots around in her tank, letting you know it's mealtime by moving all the small rocks and generally making a fuss.

The benefits and joy of owning a pet aren't new in Australia; in fact, we Aussies have one of the world’s highest rates of pet ownership!

Benefits of Owning a Pet

All types of pets have been proven to help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. They ease loneliness, help us to feel more joyful and have many other important physical and emotional health benefits

In general, having pets in our lives lifts our spirits and can help us relax. They give us a reason for getting up in the morning and are also great conversation starters. Pet lovers will often migrate to each other. Moreover, non-pet owners often approach people who have pets just to say hello.

Regular walking or playing with pets can decrease blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. Triglycerides are fats found in your blood. High triglycerides can lead to health issues like heart disease. According to RSPCA pet ownership can also reduce cholesterol in men.

In addition to all of these benefits, pets can also help us to overcome feelings of loneliness and sadness by providing companionship. They help us feel less vulnerable.

Pets and Our Children

The RSPCA reports that school children who own pets are more empathetic than those without pets, and these children often have higher self-esteem. Pet ownership also encourages responsibility. Children learn that they have a living being relying on them. Whether it’s playing with their cat, feeding or cleaning the pet space or even going for walks, this potentially leads to less screen time and extra physical activity.

Children often form deep bonds with their pets and tell them their deepest secrets. On the downside, children’s exposure to death is often through the loss of a loved pet.

Research also shows that pet ownership as a child during infancy may help strengthen the child’s immune system and reduce the risk of allergies.

Responsibilities of Pet Ownership

Before you go out and get your pet, you should really think about whether you can provide them with the care and attention they require. This involves fundamental needs such as food, drink, toys, and shelter, as well as additional duties.

It's wonderful to pick the ideal pet for you, but it takes time, preparation, and a lots of research. You must carefully examine both your own needs and the requirements of any animal that comes into your life.

It is essential to ensure you don’t over commit to a pet. You have to be certain that you can provide for it adequately. The health and safety of your pet should be your top priority.

Many pets also need interaction; dogs, for instance, see their humans as part of their pack. So choose wisely; if you live in a small unit, don’t get a border collie dog. Choose a cat, small dog or bird, for instance.

Our Pets

It's difficult to explain why we adore our pets so much. We see nothing but love reflected back at us when our animals stare into our eyes. Our pets are like children to us.

We have regular visitors in our Bondi Junction office; Knox and P’Roy often come in with their mum Sally. Sally rescues Greyhounds and gives them the most beautiful home. Research shows that it's beneficial to have pets at work. They make everyone smile and boost productivity.

We wanted to share few of our gorgeous pet pictures with you all with a wish that they bring a smile to your face as they do to ours. Perhaps you will even consider adding a new member to your family if you don't already have one.
